Sacred Symbols Through Cultures in the Light of the Bible

Across time and nations, people have physically marked themselves on the forehead, hands and body as a sign of identity, covenant, protection or spiritual insight. This theme explores three powerful symbols:

1. Tefillin from Judaism

2. Hand Bands from diverse indigenous and spiritual traditions

3. Pottu (Bindi) from Indian cultures

Although they come from different cultural paths, all three echo the biblical call to carry God’s Word, identity, and light visibly and actively.

1. Tefillin

Dates back over 3,000 years, rooted in Hebrew tradition. Based on God's commandments in Torah: leather boxes with scrolls of Scripture, tied to forehead and arm. Represents obedience, remembrance, and God's law being bound to thought and action.

 Old Testament Verses:

“Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” - Deuteronomy 6:8

“These commandments... Impress them on your children. Talk about them... Bind them as symbols on your hands...” - Deuteronomy 11:18

 New Testament Insight:

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind...” - Romans 12:2

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 2:5

“Put on the full armor of God... Take the helmet of salvation.” - Ephesians 6:11–17

 Light Message:

Tefillin is a visual commitment to keep God's law close. In Christ, the Law becomes internalized we are called to renew our minds and walk in truth.

 2. Hand Bands / Wrist Bindings

Seen in Africa, Asia, Native America, Pacific Islands, and Hindu-Buddhist practices. Used for protection, vows, tribal status, spiritual identity. Hindu red thread (Kalava): tied during pujas. African beaded bracelets: carry ancestral blessings.

Old Testament Connections:

“Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm...” - Song of Solomon 8:6

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” - Ecclesiastes 9:10

“I have engraved you on the palms of my hands...” - Isaiah 49:16

 New Testament Fulfillment:

“Lift up holy hands in prayer...” - 1 Timothy 2:8

“We are God’s handwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works...” - Ephesians 2:10

“Whatever you do, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” - Colossians 3:17

Light Message:

Hand bands reflect action and identity. In the New Testament, our hands are sanctified for worship, service, and spiritual labor, marked not with string but with God’s Spirit.

 3. Pottu / Bindi

Found in Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist traditions for over 2,000 years. Placed on the forehead, at the location of the Ajna chakra (“third eye”) a center of intuition and divine insight. Married women wear red bindi's; spiritual seekers wear sacred ash or sandal paste.

 Old Testament:

The high priest wore a gold plate on his forehead inscribed ‘HOLY TO THE LORD.’- Exodus 28:36-38

New Testament:

“They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.” - Revelation 22:4

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” - Matthew 6:22

“You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit...” - Ephesians 1:13

 Light Message:

The forehead symbolizes vision, focus and identity. In Revelation, believers are marked with God’s name not with pigment, but with the seal of salvation and the mind of Christ.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” - Matthew 22:37.“May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:23

 Live as Carriers of Light

The New Testament calls us not just to wear symbols but to be symbols of God’s truth in a dark world.

“You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before others.” - Matthew 5:14-16

“Do not merely listen to the word… do what it says.” - James 1:22

“Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” - Ephesians 4:24
